Plainview is home for Interiors by Just Design. Robyn Baumgarten runs her studio right here on Autumn Drive, and she has designed Long Island homes for more than 25 years. Her work has appeared in House, Distinction, Fashion Manuscript, Newsday, and the Long Island Press.
Most Plainview homes were built after the war, when farmland gave way to new neighborhoods. Capes, splits, and hi-ranches fill the streets from Manetto Hill to Old Country Road. Robyn knows these floor plans well, so she can open them up and make them feel new.
She also brings in pieces you cannot buy at the mall. Through a network of more than 150 trade vendors, Robyn sources furniture, tile, and lighting made for your home.
We live and work in Plainview, so we know the schools, the streets, and the homes. When you call, you are working with neighbors who care about getting it right.
Being close also helps the project. Robyn can stop by for a quick check on a delivery or a paint sample without a long drive, which keeps small decisions from slowing the schedule.
Robyn runs the whole job herself. She lines up the trades, holds the schedule, and checks each finish, from the first sketch to the last detail.
Two kinds of projects make up most of our local work: updating postwar houses and furnishing brand-new ones.
Galley kitchens and small, closed rooms were the norm when these houses went up. Today, most families want the kitchen open to the living space, with an island for homework and casual meals.
Robyn works out which walls can come down, often with your contractor, then plans the island, storage, and lighting around the new layout. In a split-level, she also looks at the half-flights between floors, so the levels feel connected rather than chopped up.
The result is a house that lives much bigger on the same footprint.
