This Dix Hills, Long Island ranch remains one of my favorite projects. It perfectly demonstrates how a thoughtful design can elevate both the architecture and the way a family lives in a space.
When I first walked into this room, I immediately saw its potential. The architecture was beginning to reveal itself, and I knew that with the right design elements, the space could become something truly special. My vision was to enhance the room’s architectural character through custom molding details and a sophisticated black-and-white palette that would bring a timeless elegance to the home.
The first step was developing a floor plan that would maximize both function and conversation. I envisioned four chairs facing one another, creating a welcoming gathering space with an almost club-like atmosphere. Since the homeowners already had additional family rooms, this space could be designed as a more intimate and unique destination within the home.
How I helped my clientsVisualize the Design
While the floor plans clearly communicated my vision, my client had difficulty visualizing the layout. Finding ways to help clients see the possibilities is one of the aspects of design I enjoy most. To bring the concept to life, I had my assistant create scaled paper cutouts representing the furniture. We arranged the pieces directly in the room, marking out the footprint of the furnishings.
The moment my client saw it, she smiled and said, “I get it.” That moment of understanding is one of the most rewarding parts of the design process.
Scaled paper cutouts marked out the footprint of each piece, so the client could see the layout at full scale in the room itself.
Once the layout was approved, I asked my client a simple question: “Are you willing to make a statement?” Her answer was an enthusiastic yes. She loved black, and together we embraced a bold design direction. I selected dramatic black wallpaper, distinctive lighting, a striking console, and unique furnishings that balanced sophistication with personality.
There was one final design element I felt strongly about, architectural molding on the ceiling. Initially, my client was hesitant, but I remained convinced it would be the feature that transformed the room from beautiful to extraordinary. After several conversations, she agreed, and the molding became the architectural statement the room needed.
In the end, the ceiling detail tied everything together, adding depth, character, and elegance. The completed room became more than just a beautifully furnished space. It became an architectural experience and a true reflection of my client’s willingness to embrace great design.
