When I was first invited into this beautiful home in Locust Valley, the initial request was to redesign a single room. While many of my projects eventually grow into larger renovations, I approach every room as an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. A thoughtfully designed space has the ability to change not only the appearance of a home but also the way people experience it every day.
From the moment I walked into the living room, I could see that the home already had wonderful architectural character. The fireplace naturally anchored the room, the built-in shelving framed the space beautifully, and large windows filled it with natural light throughout the day. Rather than changing the architecture, my goal was to highlight it by introducing thoughtful layers of color, texture, and custom details that would allow the room to feel complete.
Like many of my projects, the design process began with the area rug. I often encourage my clients to select a rug early because it becomes the foundation for everything that follows. The rug establishes the personality of the room, influences the color palette, and helps guide every design decision moving forward.
For this project, the rug featured a beautiful soft blue that immediately caught my attention. It wasn’t loud or trendy, but elegant and timeless. That subtle blue became the thread that tied the entire room together. Rather than introducing multiple competing colors, I chose to embrace that one tone and carry it throughout the space in a thoughtful and understated way.
As the design developed, one feature quickly became the centerpiece of the room: the fireplace wall.
Although the fireplace already had beautiful proportions, I wanted it to become a stronger architectural focal point. We introduced the same rich blue tone from the rug onto the walls surrounding the fireplace and custom built-ins. This one decision dramatically changed the feeling of the room. The deeper color added dimension while allowing the crisp white millwork to stand out beautifully.
I have always believed that architecture should be celebrated. Beautiful molding, custom cabinetry, and carefully designed millwork deserve to be highlighted rather than blending into the background. The contrast between the blue walls and the bright white fireplace created exactly the balance I was hoping for. It emphasized every architectural detail while maintaining an inviting and comfortable atmosphere.
The custom millwork became one of my favorite elements of the project. The fireplace mantel, shelving, and cabinetry work together as one unified composition rather than separate pieces. These architectural details give the room permanence and create the feeling that they have always belonged in the home.
Once the architectural foundation was complete, we turned our attention to the furnishings. My goal was to create a room that felt sophisticated without feeling formal. I wanted it to be elegant enough for entertaining while remaining comfortable enough for everyday living.
Soft neutral upholstery balanced the darker wall color and kept the room feeling bright and open. The woven accent chairs introduced subtle texture and warmth while complementing the natural hardwood floors. Rather than choosing a heavy cocktail table, I selected a clear acrylic table that almost disappears within the space. This allows the beautiful area rug to remain visible while helping the room feel open and airy.
One of my favorite aspects of interior design is layering different materials instead of relying on color alone. Throughout this room, smooth painted millwork is paired with woven textures, polished acrylic, warm wood flooring, soft upholstery, glass accessories, and natural greenery. Each material contributes something different, creating visual interest while maintaining a calm and cohesive palette.
The built-in shelving also became an opportunity to add personality. Styling shelves is never about filling every inch with accessories. Instead, I approach them as carefully curated compositions. Books, sculptural objects, greenery, and meaningful personal pieces are balanced with negative space so that each item has room to be appreciated. The finished shelves feel collected over time rather than simply decorated.
This home holds special meaning for me because of one small detail that became one of the most memorable moments of the entire project.
During one of my early visits, I noticed a framed photograph of the family’s dog sitting quietly among their belongings. It wasn’t displayed prominently, but something about it immediately caught my attention. As we continued developing the design, I kept thinking about that photograph and how much joy it clearly represented for my clients.
Rather than treating it as another accessory, I decided it deserved a place of honor.
We incorporated the photograph as the focal artwork above the fireplace, allowing it to become the heart of the room. While every design element, from the millwork to the furnishings, helped create a beautiful space, that single photograph made the room personal.
When the project was complete and my client walked into the finished living room, one of the first things she noticed was her dog’s portrait displayed above the fireplace. Her face immediately lit up. She was genuinely excited and touched that we had chosen to feature something so meaningful to her family.
Moments like that remind me why I love what I do.
Beautiful furniture and carefully selected finishes are certainly important, but what truly transforms a house into a home are the personal details that tell a family’s story. I always try to look beyond the floor plans, fabrics, and finishes to discover those meaningful pieces that deserve to be celebrated. Incorporating something that already holds sentimental value often creates the strongest emotional connection to a space.
As we completed the finishing touches, every element felt connected back to the original inspiration. The soft blue from the rug carried throughout the room, the white architectural detailing framed the space beautifully, and every furnishing contributed to an atmosphere that feels relaxed, timeless, and welcoming.
One of the reasons I enjoy projects like this is because they demonstrate that thoughtful design doesn’t always require dramatic structural changes. Sometimes the greatest transformation comes from understanding the home’s existing strengths and building upon them. By carefully considering proportion, color, architecture, and the personal stories behind the people who live there, a room can become something far greater than the sum of its individual pieces.
Although I was originally hired to redesign only this living room, the finished space feels as though it has always belonged within the home. It is elegant without being overly formal, refined without feeling untouchable, and designed to be lived in every day.
For me, this project is a reminder that successful interior design is never just about creating beautiful rooms. It is about creating spaces that reflect the people who live in them. When a client walks into their completed home and immediately recognizes themselves within the design, I know we have achieved something truly meaningful.
